ROBERT J. HARIRI, MD, PHD

Dr. Hariri is a surgeon, biomedical scientist, and successful entrepreneur in both biomedicine and aerospace. The chairman, founder, chief scientific officer, and former CEO of Celgene Cellular Therapeutics, one of the world’s largest human cellular therapeutics companies, Hariri pioneered the use of stem cells to treat a range of life-threatening diseases. He discovered pluripotent stem cells from the placenta and, with his research team, discovered tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Hariri received the prestigious Thomas Alva Edison Award in 2007 and 2011, the Fred J. Epstein Lifetime Achievement Award, and numerous other honors.
Hariri is an adjunct associate professor of pathology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is on the board of visitors of the Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Science & Technology Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also on the scientific advisory board for the Archon Genomics XPRIZE. Hariri was appointed to the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research by Governor Chris Christie.
Hariri is a graduate of Columbia College and Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and earned his MD and PhD degrees from Cornell University Medical College. He trained in surgery at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where he also directed the Aitken Neurosurgery Laboratory and the Center for Trauma Research.
